GPS fleet tracking services track information like safety, routes and maintenance in vehicles through a GPS hardware device that is installed into each vehicle. The hardware automatically reports back to the cloud-based GPS fleet tracking software, and a monthly fee is paid in order to use the software and access user support.

What Can Be Tracked with a GPS Tracker?

The GPS tracker can track the routes of vehicles, including where they start and stop and for how long. This can help to keep track of how long each installation, delivery or other activity is taking, and that data can help improve efficiency at each type of stop.

All GPS trackers can also track how fast a vehicle is traveling. Custom alerts can be created to inform when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed. Vehicle idling is also trackable which is helpful data for reducing fuel waste.

These devices also track safety information, such as aggressive braking, aggressive acceleration and seatbelt use. Maintenance information can also be tracked and even include engine fault codes, which can help quickly identify issues.

Interactive Maps and Vehicle History

The G-trac fleet tracking system has an interactive map where each vehicle’s location can be viewed. This includes movement, idling and powered off vehicles. We offer an easy-to-navigate map, with color-coded vehicle icons and menus that provide additional vehicle details when clicked.

In each company’s software, historic reports can be created to provide detailed history of a selected vehicle’s activities for a specified amount of time, down to the minute. Where a particular vehicle traveled in a day, where and when it stopped and for how long, idling time, and even if a vehicle breaks compliance, such as exceeding a certain speed, braking harshly or accelerating aggressively. A report easily viewable alongside the vehicle location map highlights corresponding events in both the map and the report history. This creates data easy to view and understand if there is a particular incident or action in question.

What Are Geofences?

A Geofence is a virtual fence drawn around an area in a tracking map (by zip code or manually). The software will alert once the tracking-enabled driver enters that space. This can be useful to discover when a vehicle enters an off-limits area or arrives at a certain common location such as a worksite. For example, if there are a lot of deliveries or service calls to a particular location, a geofence can be created around that area. Alerts when the vehicle enters the geofence area can offer confirmation that activities, deliveries or services are occurring at a particular time.
